Frontier Silicon launches products and support for new digital broadcasting push in Taiwan

Leader in digital multimedia solutions launches combined digital TV/radio chip, and announces Apache Communication as Taiwan support firm

Taipai, 7th September 2004: Frontier Silicon – the world’s leading fabless manufacturer of semiconductors for digital TV/radio and consumer multimedia products – today hosts a series of launch events in Taipei to announce its plans to support the emerging DAB digital radio and DVB-T digital terrestrial broadcasting market in Taiwan. As part of this support, Frontier Silicon will announce details of it Logie FS5021 advanced single chip DVB-T/DAB decoder, and present Apache Communication Inc. as its main representative for local support in Taiwan.

Chips and modules from Frontier Silicon have already become the industry standard for the majority of digital radio products sold in Europe and featuring DAB functionality – in handheld, kitchen radio, and emerging in-car audio systems – with over one million chips in over 50 different products including the latest from TEAC, Philips, Grundig, Hitachi, Sharp, Sony, Roberts and PURE Digital.

As a fabless semiconductor company, Frontier Silicon provides the systems on a chip (SoC’s) and applications software that allow leading consumer electronics manufacturers to significantly reduce the design time and cost of production of new digital radio and TV products.

The Logie IC is a single-chip solution for combined DVB-T and DAB reception developed by Frontier Silicon, and is already shipping in volume in set-top boxes made by companies like Goodmans. The highly integrated chip provides all the functions required for receiving DVB-T and DAB, fully decoding this input to an analogue video and audio output. It also provides multimedia system support through its integrated ATAPI and AV-interface for integrating DVD playback capability and pay-TV application support through a common interface as well as dual smartcards.

The chip will therefore provide the catalyst for the uptake of digital TV when it commences in Taiwan and other international markets by reducing the cost of digital STB (set-top box) products. It is the most advanced single-chip solution for digital consumer electronics products, enabling a number of major digital video, audio and broadcast applications to run on a single low-cost SoC.

Apache Communication Inc. will act as the main reference point for Frontier Silicon in Taiwan, to provide support for both existing customers as well as sales for new customers, working closely with Frontier’s Far East operations office in Shenzhen. Apache’s role in Frontier’s Taiwan operation will be more than just a distributor, as Apache has significant engineering experience that allows the company to provide both technical support as well as turnkey reference designs and solutions for manufacturers considering developing digital radio and digital TV receivers and set-top boxes.
