Frontier Silicon continues expansion in Asia
Frontier Silicon continues expansion in Asia with office in South Korea to
support world's first commercial mobile digital TV rollout
Seoul office will concentrate on assisting leading handset manufactures in
the development of mobile TV products for the global market
Seoul, South Korea, 19 October 2005:
Frontier Silicon - the leading fabless
manufacturer of semiconductors for mobile digital television (MDTV) and DAB
digital radio products - has today opened its office in Seoul, South Korea,
to support the launch of the world's first commercial T-DMB mobile
television service. The company is already working with the leading
cellphone manufacturers in the region and the new office will provide
essential local applications engineering support and customer service as the
country builds up to the launch of mobile TV.
The new office in Korea will be headed up by K.N. Kim, formerly general
manager at Samsung, and managing director of BSI Group (the leading ST
Microelectronics distributor). With over 20 years experience in the
semiconductors, electronics and communications industries, he has held a
number of sales, marketing, business development and general manager roles.
K.N. Kim will manage an initial team of applications engineering, sales and
support staff.
Anthony Sethill, CEO of Frontier Silicon, commented, "K.N. Kim's extensive
network of senior level contacts in the Asia-Pacific region plus his
understanding of the multi-cultural business environment across Korea, China
and Europe is going to be of major benefit to Frontier Silicon as we ramp up
our support and promotion of mobile digital television both in Korea and the
rest of Asia. This office is therefore going to be an important part of our
commitment to the region, and contribute to the growth of a potentially
fast-growing market for mobile digital television services."
KN Kim added, "Over 120 million handsets are manufactured a year in South
Korea. With mobile TV being the big killer application the mobile
communications and broadcast industries have been waiting for, whatever
happens here in South Korea will undoubtedly be a blueprint for many markets
worldwide. Frontier Silicon has invested heavily in mobile TV product
development starting with our first semiconductor solutions for T-DMB over
two years ago in conjunction with our partners in South Korea. With our new
operation here we are ideally placed to support some of the leading players
in the mobile TV market at this exciting time."
Frontier Silicon's mobile TV strategy is based on developing
multi-band/multi-standard solutions in order to support the multiple
transmission standards used in commercial launches of mobile TV broadcasts
across Korea, USA, Japan and Europe. Last month the company successfully
demonstrated T-DMB compliant mobile TV reception using Frontier Silicon's
Kino chipset, which is currently sampling to multiple customers and expected
to go in to volume production by the year end; the company also showed its
DVB-H mobile TV capability for the first time last month.
