Frontier Silicon chips paving the way for mobile TV roll out in Europe and Asia
London, 13 February 2006: A new innovation from Frontier Silicon, Apollo, a low power Band-III and L-Band tuner for T-DMB, will speed up the roll out of mobile TV worldwide.
With the recent announcement from Samsung of a GSM mobile phone with
T-DMB for the European market, it is clear that mobile TV using T-DMB is
becoming a global reality.
Since its successful commercial launch last December in Korea, T-DMB is spreading its wings across Europe, China and India, targeting both GSM and CDMA markets. The challenge to date with T-DMB receivers in Europe and Asia had been that different regions transmit T-DMB on different bands; L-Band or Band-III.
Single Chip Solution
Frontier Silicon has solved this problem by integrating Band-III and L-Band reception into the Apollo T-DMB RF receiver. Coupled with the flexibility of Frontier Silicon's Kino baseband processor, Apollo offers a complete T-DMB solution for both GSM and CDMA handset manufacturers delivering economies of scale across the markets in Europe, China and India.
Multiple Bands
The global plans for T-DMB based mobile TV service launches in 2006 are using transmissions in either Band-III or L-Band depending on the available radio frequency spectrum in each particular geographical region.
"Using the Frontier Silicon Apollo multi-band RF tuner enables a mobile manufacturer to design a single phone platform that can receive T-DMB services no matter which frequency they are transmitted at", says Martin Jackson, Chief Technology Officer at Frontier Silicon. "Apollo ensures that the costs for mobile TV receivers can be reduced significantly. Instead of developing phones for individual markets, manufacturers can now focus on one platform that can be used in multiple regions. This will speed up the roll out of mobile TV throughout the different countries that are adopting T-DMB."
