Frontier Silicon launches lowest power consumption single-chip DVB-H mobile TV solution

Paradiso 1H

London & Dublin, 9th February, 2007 - Frontier Silicon has announced a single-chip IC (integrated circuit) for DVB-H broadcast mobile digital TV (MDTV), enabling longer battery life, smaller handset form factors and faster time-to-market.  The new IC, called Paradiso 1H, utilizes enhanced system-in-package (SiP) techniques developed by the company to integrate the advanced Paradiso multi-standard baseband IC with a high performance RF tuner and ancillary passive components giving the lowest possible MDTV power consumption, solution footprint and system cost.  Paradiso 1H will be demonstrated on the Frontier Silicon stand at 3GSM World Congress (Hall1, J36).

The Pardiso1H gives industry leading power consumption figures with the Paradiso baseband IC consuming less than 15mW in a typical DVB-H application.  Delivered in a single-chip ball-grid array (BGA) package the small mechanical footprint of Paradiso 1H allows MDTV product manufacturers the freedom to deliver DVB-H-enabled cellular handsets and non-cellular devices to consumers in previously unachievable form factors.  Manufacturers also benefit from reduced development timescales and time-to-market through the integration of all of the key components required for a complete DVB-H receiver, including front-end amplification.

Paradiso 1H exceeds all performance parameters as defined in the de facto industry DVB-H specification, MBRAI (Mobile and Portable DVB-T Radio Access Interface Specification).  In addition, innovative use of proven SiP manufacturing techniques ensures Paradiso 1H delivers not only a high performance DVB-H solution, but is also physically robust and mechanically reliable in the challenging environment of consumer electronics and mobile products.  Paradiso 1H meets all appropriate JEDEC reliability standards, and through the use of BGA connectivity, avoids susceptibility to the co-planarity and “drop-test” reliability issues associated with other packaging solutions.

Another key benefit of Paradiso 1H is its software defined architecture which enables customers to rapidly reconfigure the device through firmware updates for localization to specific network operator DVB-H transmission requirements.  Additionally, since the Paradiso baseband hardware also supports the T-DMB and DAB-IP MDTV standards through simple firmware updates, customers can utilize the system and software integration benefits of the Paradiso building block when employing other future Paradiso-based MDTV solutions.
